How to Remove Oil Stains From Driveways — What Actually Works — WSI Cleaning Hunter Valley

Oil stains on driveways are one of the most common and frustrating problems for homeowners in Hunter Valley and Newcastle. Whether it's a slow leak from a parked car, a spill during an oil change, or years of accumulated drips, oil penetrates concrete and pavers quickly and becomes harder to remove the longer it's left. Here's what actually works — and what doesn't.

Why Oil Stains Are Hard to Remove From Concrete

Concrete is a porous material. When oil is spilled, it penetrates into the pores and bonds with the concrete matrix. Surface cleaning alone won't remove it — you need to either draw the oil out of the pores or break it down chemically. The older the stain, the deeper it has penetrated, and the harder it is to remove completely. Fresh stains (less than 24 hours old) are significantly easier to treat than old, set stains.

Method 1: Absorbent Material (Fresh Stains Only)

For fresh oil spills, act immediately. Cover the stain generously with an absorbent material — cat litter, baking soda, sawdust, or commercial oil absorbent. Leave for at least 30 minutes (longer for larger spills), then sweep up and dispose of the material. This won't remove the stain completely but will prevent it from penetrating deeper. Follow up with a degreaser treatment.

Method 2: Degreaser and Hot Water

A commercial concrete degreaser (available from hardware stores) is the most effective DIY treatment for oil stains. Apply the degreaser to the stain, scrub with a stiff brush, leave for the recommended dwell time (usually 10–30 minutes), then rinse with hot water. For stubborn stains, repeat the process 2–3 times. Avoid using cold water — hot water is significantly more effective at emulsifying oil.

Method 3: Professional Pressure Washing with Degreaser

For large areas, multiple stains, or stains that haven't responded to DIY treatment, professional pressure washing with a commercial degreaser is the most effective solution. Professional equipment operates at significantly higher pressure and temperature than consumer-grade pressure washers, and commercial degreasers are more concentrated and effective than retail products. WSI Cleaning provides driveway cleaning services across Hunter Valley, Newcastle, Maitland, and Cessnock.

What Doesn't Work

Bleach does not remove oil stains — it may lighten the appearance temporarily but won't break down the oil. Dish soap can help with fresh, light stains but is generally too mild for set stains on concrete. High-pressure water alone without a degreaser will spread the oil rather than remove it. And sanding or grinding the surface removes the stain but also damages the concrete finish.

Preventing Oil Stains on Your Driveway

The best way to deal with oil stains is to prevent them. Use a drip tray under vehicles that are leaking. Apply a concrete sealer to your driveway every 3–5 years — sealed concrete is significantly more resistant to oil penetration. Clean up spills immediately. And schedule a professional driveway clean every 1–2 years to remove accumulated grime before it becomes embedded.
