Gutters are one of the most overlooked parts of a home — until they fail. Blocked gutters can cause water damage to fascia boards, eaves, and foundations; create conditions for mould growth on exterior walls; attract pests; and in severe cases, lead to structural damage. In Hunter Valley and Newcastle, where summer storms can drop significant rainfall in short periods, blocked gutters are a serious risk.
Sign 1: Water Overflowing During Rain
The most obvious sign of blocked gutters is water cascading over the sides during rain events rather than flowing through the downpipes. If you see waterfalls coming from your gutters during a storm, they're blocked. This overflow can saturate the soil around your foundations, cause erosion, and splash water onto your exterior walls — accelerating mould growth.
Sign 2: Plants Growing in Your Gutters
If you can see grass, weeds, or moss growing in your gutters from the ground, they're not just blocked — they're full of soil and organic debris that has been accumulating for years. This level of blockage can add significant weight to your gutters, potentially causing them to pull away from the fascia board.
Sign 3: Staining on Exterior Walls Below the Gutter Line
Vertical staining or mould growth on exterior walls directly below the gutter line is a sign that water has been overflowing and running down the wall. This is particularly common on the shaded sides of houses and can lead to significant mould problems on weatherboard and render surfaces.
Sign 4: Sagging Gutters
Gutters filled with wet debris are extremely heavy. Over time, this weight causes gutters to sag and pull away from the fascia board, creating gaps that allow water to run behind the gutter and into the wall cavity. Sagging gutters are a sign of long-term blockage and require both cleaning and potential re-securing or replacement.
Sign 5: Pests Around Your Roof
Blocked gutters full of organic debris are ideal nesting sites for birds, possums, and insects. If you notice increased pest activity around your roofline, blocked gutters may be the cause. Pest nests in gutters add to the blockage and can damage the gutter material.
Sign 6: It's Been More Than 12 Months Since Your Last Clean
In Hunter Valley and Newcastle, gutters should be cleaned at least once a year — ideally twice (after autumn leaf fall and after spring). Properties surrounded by trees may need quarterly cleaning. If you can't remember the last time your gutters were cleaned, they almost certainly need attention.
